Thomas Black

University Registrar and Assistant Vice Provost, Johns Hopkins University

Baltimore, Maryland
Office Representing: Registrar

In October 2017, Thomas Black joined Johns Hopkins University as the first university registrar. In his role he leads the divisional registrars, who continue to serve individual schools, to help simplify and unify the function of registration. Black's primary responsibilities are to coordinate and facilitate efforts across the institution's nine academic divisions and to review and streamline processes and policies that enhance the student experience and establish best practices. Prior to his new appointment, he served for 10 years as the university registrar and associate vice provost for student and academic services at Stanford University, overseeing the university registrar, student services center, accessible education, student financial services, and the Bechtel International Student Center. He has spent four decades working in related positions, including as university registrar at the University of Chicago, Duke, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?

"My passion is providing best-in-class student and academic services and credential verification and validation in anticipation of the needs of today's student and alumni," Black said. "For the past few years, my efforts have related to ‘the next generation student academic record,' including perfecting the electronic transcript—and related digital academic credentials, and its safe delivery via the internet based on national standards. I look at the registrar position as a craft; if done well, I believe it can enhance people's lives."

Why did you apply to be a part of the Forward50? What drew you to this opportunity?

"I have always considered myself an innovative forward thinker," Black said. "The possibility of collaborating with other forward thinkers from some of the best educational institutions in the country is what drew me to this opportunity."
