Before accepting his position as President, Gregory Haile, Esq. served as General Counsel and VP of Public Policy and Government Affairs. After obtaining a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and a doctorate from the Columbia University School of Law, Gregory Haile started his career as a corporate litigator, focusing primarily on class action securities litigation and employment law. He currently serves as the chief legal counsel for Broward College, where he oversees all legal issues and all government affairs, including advocating before local, state and federal policymakers to enhance their understanding of higher education issues, the impact of potential or pending legislation on institutions of higher education, and the impact on students. Haile also teaches a self-designed course in higher education law and policy at Harvard University and previously served as an adjunct professor with Broward College and Miami Dade College. He is a fellow of the Vanderbilt University Higher Education Management Institute.  

How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?

"I first became interested in in higher education issues as a college student," Haile said. "As a college student, I required remedial education, received a Pell Grant, worked as a tutor, worked in the college's financial aid office, launched a scholarship program, and formed an organization designed to increase the matriculation of minority males in college. These experiences exposed me not only to the inequities of access to and performance in higher education, but to the transformative influence of higher education."  

Why did you apply to be a part of the Higher Education Committee of 50? What drew you to this opportunity?

"Supporting access, affordability, persistence, and completion is critical to our local, national, and global economies," Haile said. "Notwithstanding their importance, each of these four critical elements are threatened by internal and external factors. I was impressed to see the [Higher Education Committee of 50] initiative to focus on innovative solutions: as resources to support the aforementioned elements decline nationally, I was anxious to devote my energy to a team willing to boldly pursue groundbreaking advancement to serve our students and our country."
