Focus Area: Affordability

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

As the senior associate vice president of student financial services, Caleb Cornelius leads the student financial services team by fostering a flexible, information-abundant, compliant, customer service-focused environment that addresses the needs of Broward College's diverse student population and the greater community it serves. In his role, Cornelius oversees financial aid administration, scholarship management, student accounts, veterans' services, and third-party sponsor billing.

How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?

"I first became interested in higher education issues as a college student at a community college," Cornelius said. "As the first person in my family to pursue a college degree, the processes seemed unnecessarily confusing, but the dedicated staff helped me along the way. That experience led me to the higher education field, and it is what drives me today."

Why did you apply to be a part of the Higher Education Committee of 50? What drew you to this opportunity?

"I believe that higher education access and funding can be simplified to improve completion," Cornelius said. "When I read about the [Higher Education Committee of 50] and the goal of this group, I wanted to be part of this historic movement to ensure that students like me do not get discouraged and drop out because of confusing processes that result from overly complicated regulations. I had a dream of working in finance, and I made it, now it is time to be part of the solution for the next generation as they reach for their dreams."
