Adjunct Assistant Professor and Student Success Coach, Mercer County Community College
With over 10 years of experience as an adjunct professor of English and composition, Victoria strives to create a compassionate, supportive, and engaging learning environment that inspires and challenges her students to grow personally and excel academically. She believes that success is something every student can achieve when given the proper tools and guidance. In addition to teaching, Victoria has lent her expertise to various higher education projects and committees. She has worked as an editor and reviewer of textbooks and online courses, and served as a mentor to colleagues as they settled into their new roles. Prior to teaching, Victoria was a marketing and public relations consultant. She received a bachelor's in mass communications from Lycoming College and earned her master's in English from Rutgers-Camden.
How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?
"As a college-level instructor and success coach, I am extremely invested in the success of my students – in and out of the classroom," Bowman said. "Keeping abreast of current issues and events in higher education helps me to anticipate my students' needs and guide them to find answers that are often hidden in plain sight. By staying well informed, I help my students take control of their education and overcome barriers for better outcomes and success, while also assisting my institution's need for retention and completion."
Why did you apply to be a part of the Forward50? What drew you to this opportunity?
"The mission of the Forward50—to increase access, affordability, transparency, and accountability in higher education for students and their families—is what drew me to this opportunity," Bowman said. "Not only as an educator, but also as the parent of a college student, I know firsthand that the higher education system, from application to graduation, is filled with complexity and mystery. I look forward to joining forces with others on the committee to help make navigating the higher education landscape an easier process for students and their families."
