As an executive officer for the University of Texas (UT) System and its 14 institutions, Stephanie Huie is in charge of planning, policy research, and accountability. She leads the development of strategies and tools directly related to achieving the goals established by the chancellor. Huie’s team has designed and implemented a unique and nationally known interactive electronic dashboard to track progress, diagnose challenges, and provide policy research to support evidence-based decision making aimed at achieving the UT System’s goals. Under her leadership, the UT System was the first system of higher education in the nation to launch a free website and tool—called seekUT—that provides salary and debt statistics of actual UT students one, five, and 10 years after graduation by major. A recent first-of-its-kind agreement with the U.S. Census Bureau will enhance seekUT and provide national salary data for all UT System students across the nation.

How did you first get interested in or involved in higher education issues?:

“In 2003, I was working at Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) designing and conducting evaluation research on interventions to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and reading in underprivileged districts. As a result of my research in the K-12 system on outcomes, I became interested in the natural progression to higher education,” Huie said. “This interest culminated in my first position in higher education as director of institutional research and later as interim associate provost at Huston-Tillotson University, a private, historically black college in Austin, Texas.”

Why did you apply to be a part of the Forward50? What drew you to this opportunity?:

“I applied to be a part of the Forward50 because leaders of higher education organizations today are responsible for taking advantage of an enormous opportunity—the opportunity to positively reshape higher education for decades to come,” Huie said. “Now more than ever before, higher education institutions are actively looking for innovative ways to better serve their constituency – to create and demonstrate value; to reduce costs and actively explore new funding streams; to rethink the way we offer education using innovative technologies; to partner with business and industry to improve our research capacity; and to enhance the economic impact we have on local, state, and national economies.
